Kano is the largest city in the north of
Nigeria and a great historical center. The ancient city has much to
offer to the tourist, photographer and historian. Kano city is the
capital of Kano state. Katsina city is the capital of Katsina state. It
is one of the northernmost cities in Nigeria and is also a very
historically rich city. The Emirs of Kano and Katsina both hold colorful
Durbas during the Muslim festival of id-el-Kabir and id-il-Malud.
Kano is also one of the most important
commercial cities in Nigeria. It is located in the north of Nigeria, and
is only a few minutes away from Niger Republic. Majority of the
Population are Muslims; but migration from the southern part of Nigeria
has increased the Christian population over the years. The town is
surrounded by a historical wall supposedly built in the 15th century.
Peanuts are major export items, bagged and stored for shipping to Lagos,
while hides and animal skin are the second most important export
commodities.
Kano is also recognized as a center of learning, being the seat of
Bayero University and Kano State Institute for higher Education. The
British Council Library and Kano State Library are located in the city.
There is also an International Airport in the city with direct flights
from Britain and Amsterdam.
